About Kosher

Understanding the fundamentals of kosher dietary laws

📖

What is Kosher?

Kosher foods conform to the Jewish dietary regulations of Kashrut. These laws determine which foods are permitted, how animals must be slaughtered, and how food must be prepared and served.

🥩

Meat & Poultry

Kosher mammals must have split hooves and chew their cud. Poultry must be from permitted species. All must undergo Shechita (ritual slaughter) and blood removal through soaking and salting.

🥛

Dairy Products

Dairy products must come from kosher animals and be produced with kosher-certified equipment. Meat and dairy products must never be mixed, cooked, or consumed together.

🐟

Fish

Kosher fish must have both fins and scales. Shellfish, crustaceans, and other seafood without fins and scales are not kosher. Fish does not require ritual slaughter.

🌿

Plant-Based Foods

All fruits, vegetables, grains, and spices are intrinsically kosher. However, produce from Israel must comply with agricultural laws, and all produce must be checked for insects.

🔍

Kosher Symbols

Look for hechsher (kosher certification marks) on product packaging. Common symbols include OU, OK, Star-K, and our own Sephardi community seal on locally certified products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about kosher certification and our services

What does kosher certification mean?

+

Kosher certification confirms that a product or establishment complies with Jewish dietary laws (Kashrut). Our department inspects ingredients, production processes, and equipment to ensure full compliance with halachic standards.

How can I get my product kosher certified?

+

Contact our department via email or phone. We will review your ingredients and production process, conduct an on-site inspection, and if everything meets kosher standards, issue a certificate. The process typically takes 2-4 weeks.

Where can I buy kosher products in Baku?

+

Many kosher-certified products are available at major supermarkets throughout Baku. Look for products with recognized hechsher symbols on the packaging. Visit our Products section for a complete list of certified items.

What is the difference between meat and dairy kosher?

+

Jewish law strictly prohibits mixing meat and dairy. Kosher kitchens maintain separate utensils, cookware, and preparation areas for meat and dairy. A waiting period is observed between consuming meat and dairy products.

Are all fruits and vegetables kosher?

+

Yes, all fruits and vegetables are inherently kosher. However, they must be carefully inspected for insects, which are not kosher. Leafy greens and berries require particularly thorough checking.

Is kosher food healthier?

+

While kosher laws are primarily religious rather than health-based, kosher food does undergo additional inspections and quality controls. The prohibition of certain animal parts and the requirement for thorough blood removal can contribute to food quality.
